2.1 Rules of Spacing

Position of the Chord refers to how the notes of a chord are arranged. The position is tight when the notes are close together,

and become wider as they separate.

Generally, one must use positions not too tight nor too wide. Unless their are exceptional situations that cannot be taken into account in studying, its especially important to avoid tight positions in the lower registers.
