Old Music Theory

Theory of the Great Composers

About

Purpose of This Site

The goal of this site is to provide an education on classical music based on the best resources written of the period. In my journey to understand how classical composers wrote music, I have found the analyses of their music under modern music theory to leave a lot to be desired. Modern analyses leave a lot of uncertainties. Mostly, the identification of their harmonies.

How did they choose chords in their chord progressions? How do you use chord inversions? Why were certain rules established? Why did they break these rules? How did they think of harmony? How did they improvise? And many more questions. By going through the books written by great theorists and composers of their time, I hope to provide a hub that could answer most (if not all) questions on classical music.

Who Am I?

I’m Kevin. I have a slight obsession with classical piano music.
